About Us
What services does Luckie's Pinestraw offer?
We sell and install pine straw, and we install mulch. On the pine straw side that covers both the material and the labor: Long Leaf Rolls and Dyed Red Rolls, delivered to your property or spread by our crew using professional edging techniques. On the mulch side we handle installation — preparation and even coverage of mulch on your beds. Residential, commercial, and HOA properties are all welcome, and estimates are free.
How long has Luckie's Pinestraw been in business?
Over 20 years. We are a family-run business based at 4125 N. Davis Hwy in Pensacola, and pine straw is what we do rather than one line item on a general landscaping menu. That experience is most visible in the parts of the job that are easy to get wrong — laying an even depth across an entire property and finishing the bed edges so they hold their line through a Gulf Coast rainy season.
What areas do you serve?
Pensacola, Gulf Breeze, Pace, Cantonment, Navarre and Perdido. Each of those has its own page on this site with local detail and pricing. If your property sits just outside one of those areas, call us anyway on 850-480-5051 — it is worth asking rather than assuming, and we will tell you straight away whether we can reach you.
Products & Pricing
What types of pine straw do you sell?
Two. Long Leaf Rolls are natural, untreated longleaf pine straw at $13.95 per roll — each roll weighs 29 to 36 lbs, covers roughly 140 square feet, and is the equivalent of 2.5 to 3 square bales. Dyed Red Rolls are $24.95 per roll, treated with a natural, plant-safe pigment that holds a vibrant ruby color for up to nine months, and are the equivalent of 2.5 square bales. Installation on either is a flat $10 per roll on top of the roll price. Natural longleaf is the more economical choice over a large area; dyed red is for properties where color retention matters most.
Do you offer bulk discounts and delivery?
Yes to both. We deliver pine straw across our service areas, and bulk pricing applies to larger orders — which is what makes us practical for HOAs, commercial frontages and large residential lots as well as single beds. Because delivery cost depends on the quantity and where the property is, we quote it rather than list a flat rate. Call 850-480-5051 with your rough square footage and we will price the straw and the delivery together.
Do you install mulch as well as pine straw?
We do. Mulch installation is $115 per yard installed. To be clear about the scope: on mulch we provide installation — preparation of the bed and even coverage — rather than selling mulch by the bag for collection. Mulch suits compact, formal beds and gives a darker, more uniform look; pine straw holds better on slopes and covers large areas more cheaply. Plenty of properties use both, and we are happy to tell you which we would use where.
Installation
What makes your pine straw installation professional?
Three things, all of which show up months later rather than on the day. First, depth: the straw goes down at a consistent two to three inches across the whole bed, which is what actually suppresses weeds and holds moisture. Second, the edges — we finish them with Trench and Tuck, cutting a three-inch trench along the bed line and tucking the straw into it, or with Curling, rolling the edge under itself with a blower. Third, the clean-up: all baling twine is removed rather than buried, and straw is kept off bushes, walls and tree trunks so moisture is not trapped against them.
What are the benefits of pine straw for my landscape?
It holds soil moisture through hot Gulf Coast summers by shading the surface and slowing evaporation, which matters most in the sandy soils common near the water. It suppresses weeds by denying seeds the light they need to germinate. Its needles knit together as they settle, so unlike looser materials it stays put on slopes and through heavy rain. It is mildly acidic as it breaks down, which suits azaleas, camellias, gardenias and blueberries. And at $13.95 per roll covering about 140 square feet, it is an economical way to cover a large area.
